The trend in retail and consumer-grade LCD monitors has been to wide-screen displays with 16:9 aspect ratios. This is the "new, modern" look.

However, many industrial and commercial systems have legacy systems which use the traditional 4:3 aspect ratio. This also matches the 4:3 aspect ratio of the majority of the cameras they use.
